Previous sessions

The table becomes the invitation.

These images are not decoration. They show how a studio visit feels in practice: work spread out, tools still wet, paper becoming book, drawing becoming structure.

Visitors arrive close to Lorna's materials and leave with a stronger sense of how place, pigment, gesture and memory can be worked into abstract form.

Simply Abstract invites students to translate landscape, memory and emotion into expressive abstract works.

The course moves between local observation and studio practice, including visits to Pambula River mouth and The Pinnacles at Beowa National Park.

Students gather local stones and pigments, make handmade watercolours, build field sketches and studies on paper or canvas, and work toward one resolved painting.

Studio rhythm

A day can move from field note to folded screen.

01 / Observe

Begin with place, then bring it back to the table.

Course days move between field observation, gathered materials and the working studio, so students can translate memory and landscape into marks rather than copy a view.

02 / Experiment

Let small works behave like pages, screens and fragments.

The studio sessions use ink, pastel, handmade tools and folded paper to test rhythm quickly. The point is momentum: marks are made, shifted, joined and questioned.

03 / Resolve

Build toward a work that still feels alive.

Students carry their best discoveries into larger sheets, concertina books or canvas studies, keeping the energy of the first mark in the final piece.
